Dec 17 project & picks :: wrapping paper + dolls
Email Post Print Post

notes

Today's project: wrapping paper... it is so fun to make!

Here's how to make wrapping paper with a potato stamp:
1. gather your children.
2. gather some paper (recycled newsprint, brown paper bags, kraft paper...anything that's large enough to wrap gifts)
3. gather paint. acrylic, washable paint is best. i'm keeping with the red/aqua theme and used aqua paint.
4. gather the potatoes.
5. learn how to make a potato stamp here.
6. using the potato stamp, print onto paper. children love the printing part, obviously... so let them have at it!
7. let dry! wrap!

Today's pick are an adorable clique of fabric dolls by Sophie & Lili - fun to play with and quite cozy on your little girl's bed.

Dec 15 project & pick :: giving + barley & birch
Email Post Print Post

notesToday's project is all about giving, the best gift of all.

There are many ways to give: time, money and things. Have fun connecting with your children on what giving means to them and how you can give as a family.

Here are some ideas:
First Books :: First Book provides new books to children in need addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books.

Oxfam America ::
Oxfam is an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice.

Voice of the Martrys :: The Voice of the Martyrs is a non-profit inter-denominational Christian organization dedicated to assisting the persecuted church worldwide.

Soles4Souls :: Soles4Souls has a simple mission: To impact as many lives as possible with the gift of shoes.

Also, ideas for giving time: We Are What We Do, Raising charitable children and an exhaustive list of service ideas.

While I am happy to say fawn&forest works with numerous companies who give to charitable causes, one that particularly stands out is Barley & Birch, who is today's pick.

B&B  makes organic cotton clothes for children, and really goes the extra mile in their process. :: they give 15% of profits  to several carbon-reducing initiatives in order to fully offset the carbon emissions that result from the production of their garments... and another 15% is donated to organizations that improve people’s lives around the world. Truly fantastic.

Dec 14 project & pick :: memory books + organic capelet
Email Post Print Post

notesKeeping a memory book of the Holidays is such a cozy idea and is today's project. I've been keeping a Christmas memory/scrapbook since my first son was a newborn. Some things, as precious as they are, are easily forgotten. Take notes!

Any journal type book will work -- Moleskine, traditional scrapbooks, or even photo album.  I use a Mokeskine.

What to include in your Holiday memory book?
- hand tracings of the kids
- snippets of giftwrap and ribbon
- cards & gift notes
- lists: what you did, what you made, where you went, things you ate
- christmas card list, or new people to add to your list
- list of gifts received, so you can be sure to write thank you notes!
- memorable moments
- photos & drawings
- recipes

With our days filled with all things digital, it's refreshing to sit down and do something on paper.

Today's Pick is something that's fully fancy and instant heirloom for your little girl: Periwinklebloom's Organic Sherpa Capelet.

Dec 11 project & pick ::cards + art supplies
Email Post Print Post

notesHave you done your Holiday cards yet? Truth: I have not, but it's in this weekend's project plan...! My plan? Forest Gnome Cards made using my children's artwork. Yes, time to dig into that heap of artwork  your children have produced thus far!

How to make a card using your child's artwork:

1. Determine he shape you want. Any shape could be used including a snowman, snowflake, angel, deer.. I chose a gnome (do a Google image search  to find the perfect image).
2. Print out your favorite image, cut around it to get a solid shape.
3. Trace the shape onto the back of the artwork (so pencil marks are not visiable on the front).
4. Cut the shape out and punch a hole at top.
5. Using red twine, create a loop and bow (your recipient can now use your "card" as an ornament!)
6. Cut a piece of cardstock to the desired size to fit both your cutout shape and the envelope. I used a flat card, but you could also fold the paper in half to create a folded card.
7. Using double sided tape, attached the Gnome (or whatever shape you use) to the cardstock. This will allow your recipient to remove and use as an ornament.
8. Stamp, write or print a greeting on the cardstock. I used a date stamper to print "12 25 09" in red.

Today's best gift pick? Clementine art supplies for your budding artist. Clementine uses only non-toxic, all natural ingredients and is environmentally friendly.

Happy Hanukkah to you as well!

Dec 10 project & pick :: wreaths + time
Email Post Print Post

wreathsWreath making will bring out your inner craftiness and is today's Project. Wreath making is great fun, the ideas limitless. Evergreen wreaths are perhaps the first sort you think about, but be sure to take a look at the inspiration i have linked to below. Paper? Gumdrops? Oragami? Old books?

I'm rolling with an aqua & red color scheme for Christmas this year (remind you of the gifts + ideas page?) and thought it'd be fun to make sparkly aqua "wreaths" for all the (inside) doors in our home.

I made the aqua wreath (shown above) in all of 8 minutes using supplies I already had. You will need: cardboard or chipboard (something sturdy), glitter, glue and thread to hang (and any additional decorative pieces ... i used a silver dot sticker garland).

Using a bowl or plate, trace a circle on the chipboard. I then added a star-ish points. Cut out the shape, cutting out the inside of the circle as well. Hole punch a hole at top. Using white glue, cover the front of the wreath then cover in glitter. Let dry + hang!

Inspiration? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.

Today's Pick will keep time.. for yourself. I am loving Decoylab's new bamboo clocks. My 2 favorites? The Squirrel and Birds & Branches.

Dec 9 project & pick :: baby's first christmast + best baby gifts
Email Post Print Post

project 7Today's project is capturing your baby's first Christmas! Next to taking 1.2 million photos, making hand print impressions is a special way to capture the tininess of this incredibly special time.

Using Crayola's Model Magic you can very easily capture your baby's tiny little fingers in an impression. Model Magic is non-toxic, non-sticky, fast drying and comes in basic white and works perfectly for this project.

To start, simply roll a ball of the clay, flattening into a circular, organic shape, about 3/4 of an inch thick. Then, take you baby's hand and gently press into the clay. Take a moment to press each finger down and even the wrist to get a good impression. If you want to be able to hang this keepsake, using a straw or small circular object, poke a hole at top.

Place the impressions on wax paper to dry which generally takes a day or so. Once dry, Model Magic clay can be painted, stained or left plain (as shown in image).

Today's pick? Baby gifts. A few of my favorites: Kina Lamb Booties, Dress Me Up Teething BonBon and Area Alma Baby Blanket.

Dec 8 project & pick :: sugar cookies + kitchen niceness
Email Post Print Post

cookies

Project Sugar Cookies. All kids love making sugar cookies. Cookie cutters, rolling out dough... squirting frosting.. sprinkles.Eating...

My 2 boys had a great time making the first batch of sugar cookies of the season recently.  Even 18 month old Owen totally got into cookie cutter. Your family is likely to have the sugar cookie recipe you turn to, my favorite is Nigella Lawson's.

It's always fun to add to the cookie cutter collection,  this year I am really loving this Northwoods set. And this year forget all about messy icing! These squeeze bottle are absolutely amazing and a lot easier for little hands to use.

Today's pick fits right in. Tea Towels by Tikoli. For Mom, because it's always nice to have towels that are lovely.

Dec 7 project & pick :: fancy garlands & crowns
Email Post Print Post

garlands

Project Garlands. Making garlands is instant satisfaction and fits every skill level.  Garlands can be made of paper, tissue paper, fabric, felt, sicker dots or sequins and can be sewn, glued, or stitched together.

In the image above (view flickr set here) the garlands were made in a variety of ways. The first garland was made of small rectangular pieces of gift wrap glued in half onto yarn. The 2nd green garland was made of green paper circles, sewn together on a sewing machine. The third garland was made of sticker dots painted silver with a silver marker, stuck back to back with clear thread in between.

The last garland (on the right) is made of organic fabric and baker's twine by Periwinklebloom and can be purchased here

For more Inspirational garlands: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve.

Today's pick goes along with the simple fanciness of a garland : wool felt Crowns by Little Red Caboose.

Dec 4 project & pick :: cookies & an apron
Email Post Print Post

cookies

Nothing quite like making a mess in the kitchen with your little ones as you bake cookies together. Children are excellent cookie makers (and eaters!).... which makes for an excellent weekend project.

Recipes? I'm a big fan of Heidi Swanson's cookie recipes, view here. We always seem to make a big batch of Grammy's Chocolate cookies and be sure to take a look at Smitten Kitchen's collection of cookie recipes.  Yum!

The boys & I made the chocolate cookies (pictured above) from the book Babycakes -- wheat & gluten free (if you're interested.) They were amaaaaaaazing.

Today's pick will help keep the little bakers clean, a Dwellstudio coated apron which is available in a variety of different patterns.

Have a wonderfully cozy weekend!

Dec 2 project & pick :: dear santa and lists
Email Post Print Post

santaWriting a letter to Santa is a total classic. Your child's imagination is free & inspired. What to ask for? What to tell Santa?

Not only does it get their  creativity rolling, it also sharpens their writing skills -- a plus!

We have the tradition of taking our boys to Macy's to mail their letters to Santa -- for more info, click here for participating stores.  For every Santa letter "mailed" at Macy's they donate $1 to the Make-a-Wish Foundations. Bonus!

For extra fun, print out a few pages of lined or story paper, here and give your child fancy pens, envelope and a special postage stamp or sticker.

For today's pick: Nikki McClure's Things to Make and Do. A journal that will spark your own creativity and urge you to do all those fun little (or big!) things you have been meaning to do.

Dec 1 project & pick :: advent calendar + heirloom growth chart
Email Post Print Post

advent calender project

Welcome to December! December 1st is so fresh & eager. Projects to be done, time to be enjoyed, shopping yet to be finished... Instead of a basic gift guide this year, I have compiled a project &  gift pick guide. To start? An advent calendar of course.

A homemade advent calendar is the ultimate countdown to Christmas and are enjoyed by kids & adults alike. Making an advent calendar need not take much time. I made the "hanging" gathered-cone advent above in an afternoon, using supplies i already had around the house.

Hanging Gathered-Cone Advent

supplies:
several sheets of pretty paper (scrapbook or magazines, giftwrap, construction paper or newsprint)
glue stick
scissors
several yards of yarn, twin or thick thread. i used about 2 feet per cone.
hole punch or stapler
the numbers 1-24 written out on their own small piece of paper
holiday outings, project ideas & other fun things to do this season written on small pieces of paper
small toys or candy (to be included inside the cones or to be given when the date is chosen)

instructions:
1. print out the cone template, I used this one and followed the cone-making directions.
2. print or write out the numbers 1-24 on small pieces of paper.
3. write out 24 things to do, places to go or project ideas. here is a good list. small toys or candy are fun too.
4. place the paper with the "activity of the day"/toy or candy inside the cone.
5. place the piece of paper that has the number on top of the cone (lightly folded flat at top to "close" the cone) and hole punch or staple together. if stapling, include yarn piece now.
6. attach the yarn by running through the holes and knot off, leaving a 2 foot tail to allow to hang.
7. once all 24 cones have been closed + yarn has been attached, gather all together to create a "bouquet" -- tie all strings together in a knot at the top. you can add a ribbon bow at top or leave plain.
8. time to hang. use the same string or clear line -- determine the length needed and attached to the advent.... and then hang from the ceiling. be safe, you don't want it to fall down!

then...
each day, give your child a pair of child safe scissors (if old enough). let him find the correct number/date and cut the cone free! enjoy your time together doing or making.

For more info on this project, view images in the advent flickr set.

Counting down.... or counting up? Today's best gift pick is the Heirloom Growth Chart by Miss Natalie.

Bamboo grows.... faster than your kids! It's the fastest growing plant on earth (bamboo can grow up to 24" in 1 day) and produces more oxygen (35% more!) than the average tree, even though it's not a tree. Bamboo is actually a grass.

That's why Bamboo is a sustainable resource.  Bamboo keeps on growing and has the capacity to endure. According to Kalon Studios,

"Sustainability is defined as having multiple intentions all of which center on the idea of balance, of giving as much as we take, be it through economics, the environment or on the everyday human level."

Kalon Studios designs thoughtful pieces for the nursery and home, made mostly of bamboo.

Aug 12 my life with the beaba babycook .06
Email Post Print Post

Part .06  Garden Fresh Dip & Sauce.

No need to banish the Beaba Babycook when baby outgrows the puree.  The Beaba also makes great fresh veggie dips & sauces for the children.

Garden Fresh Dip & Sauce
This recipe is more of a concept, as any veggies could be added. This is what I used:

1-2 tomatoes (depending on size), cored, seeded & chopped
1 small zucchini, chopped
1 big handful of clean spinach
1 clove of garlic, sliced

other ideas:
1 carrot, chopped
sweet potato, chopped
swiss chard, chopped

Follow the Beaba instructions for adding water & layer all veggies into the steamer basket. Steam until all veggies are sufficiently mushy, about 10 minutes.  Remove excess liquids from the base of the steamer & empty veggies into the chopping bowl. Blitz until you reach the desired consistency --chunky to smooth.

For sauce:
At this point, you have a healthy sauce for pasta, rice, quinoa, lentils etc. To create individual portions for a quick lunch, freeze single size portions (in the Beaba multi-portions or Fresh Baby food trays, shown above). Suitable for children who have already eaten each included veggie separately.

For dip:
I'm fairly certain every kiddo loves dip! Cool the puree in the bowl, then add cream cheese. If not using cow's milk, soft goat cheese is a great alternative. The amount of soft cheese needed will depend on the amount of veggies you have made. It's best to incorporate small amounts at a time, until you reach the right texture.

Depending on the age of your child, this would be great for dipping fresh or steamed carrot sticks, broccoli or for spread on crackers or a turkey sandwich.

Jul 2 project :: paint the toys
Email Post Print Post

Summertime is in full swing! Long days, endless popsicles. Big imaginations. A lot of everything + nothing to do.

My son Eliot asked to paint. One thing led to another, and soon he was driving his cars through the paint. And then, "Mama, can I paint my cars?" ...kids have such vibrant imaginations, that to him, painting his cars made perfect sense. "Sure!"

Painting cars added a whole new dimension to Eliot's play. He was able to experience his world in a whole new way. Certainly more about the process than the product!

project :: painting toys

supplies:
washable, non-toxic paint
paint brushes
water + container -- i re-use containers (above, right) ... recycle when you're done! no clean-up.
toys -- just make sure your kid knows that the paint probably wont come off -- we don't want any tears!
paper -- the bigger, the the better. newsprint (recycled!) would also work well.
drop-cloth -- an old sheet works well.

process:
Have a happy attitude, big imagination + have fun! Paint the car's wheels and make them zoom across the paper. Paint dolly's feet and she will dance! Fun prints could be made with the marks of the toys -- but really.... painting and playing is enough on it's own.

I love it when people are inspired by things of old. The Mother Stork's Baby Book by Elizabeth Brantley is not only pays respect to the original, but is thoughtfully updated (no yellowing pages!). Your children will literally feel as though you have written a book about them -- so satisfying, so beautiful! Thanks Elizabeth

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was a kid I wanted to be a mom. Nothing else. Once I was in high school I decided I wanted to have a career (before being a mom) where I could go into work when needed, share my expertise, work very hard, make great money and then leave - oh and I had to be able to wear ripped jeans and cowboy books (it was the late 1980s after all). My career in the film industry fit that description pretty well: freelance, respect, hard work, good money and jeans (though not ripped and no cowboys boots).

What inspired you to create the Mother Stork's baby book?
Seeing my Grandmother’s baby book, the original 1904 edition of Mother Stork’s Baby Book, is solely what inspired me to recreate the 100th Anniversary Edition on the book.  I had never seen anything like it and after doing research found that there was nothing else like it available.  I had no experience in book creation and layout, publishing, retail, wholesale, packaging or marketing.  I did have the drive to make it happen and people cheering me on along the way, especially my husband Steve and my mom.

What's happening? What does the rest of 2009 look like for you?
2008 was such a busy year.  We recreated our website (my husband is the webmaster), created and launched three new product lines (Mother Stork’s Baby Art, Cashmere Chime Balls and Cashmere Baby Blankets) and all while being a full-time stay-at-home mom of a toddler.  So far In 2009 I have added one new product line (Cashmere Eye Pillows).  I have more new products in mind for the future.  I think for now my focus will continue to be nurturing Kistner Supply and making sure my customers are happy by continuing to provide high quality, beautiful products and excellent, personal customer service.

We all love our kids, we really do. We just don't want our living rooms to look like we live with our kids. You know what I mean. Plastic fantastic, etc.

Jennifer Delonge understands. She's a mom with a load of style, and evidently... some wit! Jennifer DeLonge's pint size Ava Chair instantly became a mommy-must have.

And now, it's all grown up. DeLonge has designed 3 beautiful gilders and ottomans for Mom. My favorite? Luxe. Such graceful lines.

Jun 22 q+a | katherine yaphe of oliver yaphe
Email Post Print Post

I think it takes dedication to be a rug designer. Katherine of Oliver & Yaphe has an amazing vision for her work and that steadfast, solid mother bear quality to her. Her artwork, which is part of this month's Forest Finds is just a sweet tiny taste of her kids rug collection. Arn't you just crazy fond of her Alphabet prints?! Rugs, by the way, are coming soon..... thanks Katherine!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Tall!  I was the shortest kid in my class for a long time.  Then all of the sudden, I grew.  After that, I really wanted to be a photographer.

How has your background inspired your current work?
My designs are entirely inspired by my personal experiences.  While visiting Barcelona, I was inspired by the liveliness of the culture and freshness of design that I witnessed.  It was there that I started sketching my kids rug collection.  Once my daughter was born, I had her rug all figured out and then realized that her walls were bare.  It wasn’t long before my artwork collection took shape.  My collection has evolved very organically.

What’s in store for the rest of 2009?
Rugs rugs rugs.  I am working to round out my kids rug collection.

Jun 18 q+a | kyle + jodie of barley & birch
Email Post Print Post

We got a call from a lady one day asking if we carried Barley & Birch. Shoot! We did not. So not cool of us. And, perhaps while there are many organic tees and onesie options in the marketplace, I am uniquely refreshed by the bold graphics of Barley & Birch. A gigantic wave tee? C'mon! That's cool. Barley & Birch is Kyle (pictured left) and Jodie (right). Thanks ladies!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Kyle- I wanted to work at Sea World. After I saw Free Willy I wrote Sea World letters monthly asking if I could come pick up trash. I am still not sure if my parents ever mailed them.
Jodie- A cartoon. Apparently I wasn't concerned with... reality.

Whats the inspiration for the imagery in your clothing?
Kyle- The cool beauty of nature and the goofiness of all animals.
Jodie- I like looking at things and find something unique and interesting about them. In my designs, I'm trying to give children something unique and interesting that they can look at, and maybe even see things I didn't.

What's happening? What does the rest of 2009 look for you?
Kyle & Jodie- It looks great! We are releasing our awesome second collection at Bubble in August, we are growing, and so we are changing the world more and more. What more can you ask for? We are also working on our line of bedding for release at the end of 2010!

Jun 17 q+a | madeleine sargent of made by mosey
Email Post Print Post

Sometimes I instantly fall in love and the Clouds Mobile did it, I was instantly taken. It's cute and cozy and looks as if it has always been. Madeleine Sargent is the Australian mother behind Made by Mosey. Thanks Madeleine!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
All sorts of things, photographer, ballerina, shopkeeper, lawyer, cake decorator, my mum....in no particular order!

Your work is  so cozy! What inspired your current collection?
Yay! Cozy is absolutely the best way to describe it! I wanted the range to create a sense of nostalgia. Of childhood and simple times. I was inspired by my lovely granny and sewing with her as a child and now with my own children, I wanted them to have sweet and simple things around the house that didn’t overwhelm them like many baby things do. Nature is of course a big inspiration and will always be, I mean look outside, how can it not?!

What does the rest of 2009 hold for you?
Definitely new mobiles, including a small hanging forest that’s not just for baby’s room. Time spent on one off creations, collaborations with my very artistic husband (if he’ll have me!) and of course school concerts, homework, playgroup, first steps.......

Jun 16 friends of the forest | the woodlands
Email Post Print Post

woodlands

Portland based The Woodlands, a wife and husband indie folk-pop duo, craft songs of lyrical poetry, lush melody and intelligent simplicity.  They conjure faraway lands and the longing of lovers with timeless imagery that unearths the shadow of tragedy and the glisten of magical realism.  Hannah’s hushed voice conveys both mirth and melancholy, tempered and surrounded by Samuel’s melodic instrumentation.  They till the soil of their souls to reap songs and sounds wrapped in a hauntingly sweet hush of wonder.

Their 2009 self-released debut album was recorded and produced by Samuel & Hannah in their Portland apartment, true to their intent of capturing intimate songs of simple complexity that sound professionally homemade.  Amidst an aged and worn wooden desk, elusive quiet night hours, and a homemade studio fort of blankets and pillows, The Woodlands traveled the byways of one another’s souls--seeking, listening and searching for words and sounds with which to share what they found.  The album has been received with both national and international anticipation, and with its release The Woodlands are set to embark as husband, wife and songlings on the voyage forthcoming.

Check out their new album at Cd Baby and Itunes as well as here on facebook.

Being the super freindly people that they are Hannah and Samuel wanted to offer up a free download of one of their wonderful songs, Summerland! Click the link below to download the mp3!

Jun 14 new! naef toys
Email Post Print Post

Fresh from the land of Switzerland, a bundle of fantastic new toys from Naef!

Naef is not messin' around + quite possibly may be older than your Granny! Naef was founded in 1954 by Kurt Naef and uses only high-quality woods from environmentally-friendly plantations in Europe.

And:  "Naef play objects are fascinating because they function with clockwork precision. If the edges of a wooden brick are not manufactured to a fraction of a millimetre, the piece will not pass our quality control. As a result, the pieces all fit precisely together, whether on, into or next to each other. " (to quote Naef's manufacturing).

Spendy little buggers, but sooooo worth it.  My favorite? Oh, it's a Dolio!

Email Post Print Post

Shirin had me at the ruffles. As soon as I saw that detailing on her predominantly organic clothing collection, I was sold. I love Shirin's imagery (kissing birds!) and use of color. Super cool. Arty. Urban. Sweet. Thanks Shirin!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Wow, I actually have to think about. I think I wanted to dance or be a choreographer. It was only when my art teacher declared to me emphatically that I was an artist did it all became very clear to me what I wanted to do.

I love how you've taken the basic & added your own unique detailing; What is your background? What inspires you?
Thank you! I have studied different mediums throughout my schooling and professional career, such as fine art, illustration, printmaking, decorative painting and textile design. What I have learned is to be patient with the creative process, to always experiment and most importantly to be open to the mistakes because they always lead to the breakthroughs. The inspiration behind the collection is to take the idea of the everyday tshirt and make it something unique and different, a wearable piece or art.

What's happening? What does the rest of 2009 hold?
It has been a very exciting year so far. I have gotten great responses to my work which is always so fulfilling. I really love my new fall collection that is coming out and I am  working on designs for next spring to launch at the Bubble kids show.

May 27 q+a | sandra bonazoli of beehive
Email Post Print Post

Beehive baby spoons are simple, sweet and make the perfect heirloom gift. They're also heavy duty (hello pewter!), sorta sassy (the back of the spoon shows each animals rear!) and totally charming. Thanks Sandra!

When you were a kid, what did you want to do when you grew up?
According to a “book” I wrote in the third grade I wanted to be a “bird – artist”, whatever that is. But, in a way, I guess that came true, as we use lots of bird motifs in our work.

What part of the creative process do you enjoy most?
Brainstorming about ideas and then executing the piece out of metal. The sort of middle stage -designing what the piece will actually look like – is the most difficult.

What's happening? What does the rest of 2009 hold?
Lots more baby/kids things and hopefully some floral inspired serving pieces. We are in doing lots of product development right now. Also I am going to school to learn the craft of chasing and repousse for two weeks this June.

May 26 q+a | jacquie barker of cuckooboo
Email Post Print Post

Cuckooboo is a blast to what could otherwise be a borning, overlooked product. Pacifiers clips, perhaps have the tendency to look sort of stupid... or maybe make you look like a crazed anti-germ momma? Dah! Cuckooboo just makes ya'll look cool. Super hip mom with the urban chic paci clip. Dang.  Thanks Jacquie!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a secretary, not sure why, but I remember that is what I wanted to be along with adopting some kids.

You are obviously an innovative mom -- what inspired you to start Cuckooboo?
I have always been creative, into art , photography and design, I have always had this feeling that I wanted to have my own business, like owning a thrift store, lol. But I never thought I would be selling my own creations and having people love them.

What's happening? What does the rest of 2009 hold?
I am currently working on an adult line of hair accessories, feathery and couture. I just introduced some new wool felt head bands and hair clips, really fun. I have a few shows lined up this summer and fall and I am always on the lookout for inspiring fabrics!

May 24 q+a | lisa golightly of kiki & polly
Email Post Print Post

You know how when you were a kid things seemed really big -- like the hallway to your bedroom, the backyard or your great-grandpa? But if you were to re-visit as an adult, what you remembered as being big is really quite small, and perhaps not as you imagined or remembered. That's the feeling I get from the amazing work of Lisa Golightly. The imagination of childhood. Sweet, sorta foggy ..... with a very particular detail sticking out -- like party hats. Perspective.

when you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
That's easy, an artist!  Actually it was only later that I have realized that not's not what every kids wants to be.  To me it was the ultimate thing to aspire to.

your artistic talent thoughtfully extends beyond paper and canvas. your portraits obviously have faces, but your other pieces of children do not. whats the story behind this?
My personal paintings/drawings relate to memory and my own childhood, my children's childhood and as an extension of that, the viewers childhood.  I think without the inclusion of a face a more interesting store can be told because it can be anyone's story.

what's happening? plans for the rest of 2009?
I am getting ready for a couple of shows and making new work.  I have a few new ideas up the ol' sleeve for some new portrait options....This year has already been very exciting for me and I hope to continue with more of the same!

Thanks Lisa! Also be sure to check out Lisa's awesome blog.

Email Post Print Post

Kristen Angelo knows whats up. She thoughtfully designs practical pieces.... that have some urban edginess for your tot.  Hello kerchief! Thanks Kristen!

What did you want to be when you grew up?
A designer.  At age 12 my friends were getting grounded for kissing boys or not calling home on time – I got grounded for spray painting antique dishware black and habitually rearranging the house while my parents were out.

Boopalina + Bebe products are incredibly well conceived, thoughtful in purpose + design. What motivates this? What sparks you?
Some products are designed from my personal experiences as a mom.  Some products are developed by literally draping fabric over my tot and drafting a pattern.  Others, often my personal favs and our most successful products, evolve from fluke and are nudged by a little random creativity.  I pull a lot of inspiration from pattern, color, texture, contemporary appeal, the flamboyant spirit of youth.  I love thumbing through a classic design book or interiors magazine and translating themes and elements to children’s design.

What does 2009 hold for you?
We’re expecting an appearance from baby no. 3 in October, and I'm hoping to gain momentum on the renovation of our 1920's craftsman home.  I look forward to expanding our range of products and print selections, transitioning to organic textiles grown and milled in the US, and introducing a new vintage modern collection of stretched canvas wall art.  In March we were approached by a major nationwide retailer interested in launching some of our products…I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what unfolds.

Email Post Print Post

I'm in love. periwinklebloom makes me want to be a little girl.... or have a little girl! While there are a couple pieces that a boy could wear, it's all about the cute dresses (bubble!) and organic girly-ness! Tyler Stallings (designer of Periwinklebloom), I am impressed.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
An architect. I also wanted to drive an 'el camino' because it was half car/half truck. I was terribly indecisive. I still find decisions painstaking and tend to research to death. I believe with better taste in cars however.

Your collection of clothing is cohesive + incrediably thoughtful. What sparked you into making children's clothes?
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I've tried to be thoughtful both with regards to design and production. I've worked as a graphic designer and educator for many years. I also have a passion for art history. When I became a mom, I wanted to blend these roles which naturally led me to designing for children. I have always been inspired by tactile design whether textiles or paper, the use of whitespace found in Japanese forms, and the aesthetics of vintage American ephemera. I suppose these things all found their way into my work.

I also, like many new parents, became hyper aware of the things we put in and on our bodies, of our family footprint, and of the excessive 'stuff' we accumulate with kids. I wanted to contribute to the way things were made for our children, thoughtfully and worthy of handing down, emphasizing a 'less is more' approach.

What does the rest of 2009 hold for you?
Hmmm, I've given in to the idea of feeling in control or actually planning some time ago. We are expecting our second little one this autumn which will only confirm my afore mentioned thoughts. periwinklebloom will offer a small collection for autumn/winter with a little more color than this first year. I've also got some fun pieces being created out of the loads of scraps I've accumulated coming soon. And I definitely plan to finish my letterpress designs for summer which have sadly been put on the back-burner for too long. That and squeeze in a vacation or two!

Thank you Tyler!

Part .05 Organic sweet potato finger food

If baby is starting to karate chop the spoon, perhaps finger foods are up next on the menu. One medium size sweet potato makes a heaping cup worth of finger food.

1. Wash, peel + dice 1 organic sweet potato. The size of the dice depends on how swanky your babe is.
2. Steam the chopped sweet potato in the Beaba by following these directions. I steamed for 4 minutes, so the chunks were soft but not falling apart.
3. Your baby will be all over feeding himself, so go ahead and give him a handful on his tray or loosely freeze in the sections of Fresh Baby Food Trays.

Ugh! Maybe i don't have time to make finger food?
It is faster to make your own finger food than buckle a baby into a carseat: 30 seconds to peel, 2 minutes to chop (small dice) and 4 minutes to steam. Presto.

Other finger food ideas?
Organic carrot (diced + steamed)
Organic potato (diced + steamed)
Organic apple (diced + lightly steamed)
Organic banana (small chunks)
Organic avocado (diced or small chunks)

Apr 24 q+a | caryn paradis of oh plah!

The Oh-Plah! Teething Bracelet was an "AH-HAH!" moment of brilliance. It's no secret that a baby is more interested in your watch-keys-bracelet than his own toys. So basically, Caryn Paradis, the designer, is a genius. My baby Owen thinks he's chewing on Mom's bracelet when actually..... Thank you Caryn!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
That would have depended on the day you asked me; it was something I was constantly changing my mind about. Looking back design and business were always a consistent theme. I grew up in a pretty rural area: you had a travel a bit to find a playmate, so I came up with the idea to create a local “play club” so at least all the kids in the area could meet at a specific time to hang out. We even named it: The Sunshine Club (ok, ok, it was the seventies!). I had everyone design a t shirt and we had a fundraiser so we could buy the t shirts and supplies. I created these little dolls from clothespins that someone could use as an ornament, toy, whatever. We made a bunch of them and sold them door to door (we must have walked 8 miles-houses weren’t close together) selling them for .25 each. I think we made about ten dollars, which we gave to my mom and she bought the tees. Come to think of it, she probably subsidized our little venture. I also wanted to be a firefighter.

You are so innovative! What is your favorite part of the process? What inspires you?

Thanks! I love design development, or as I like to call it: the mulling over phase. It’s after I have a path to go down (a hint of a solution for an idea) but I haven’t really done anything with it, but the doors are wide open and the skies the limit. It’s very exciting. I’m one of those people that has trouble sitting still, so when I’m designing something I’ll take a walk or pace, or walk circles inside my house. Seems like when my legs are moving I can focus, and an idea that has been sitting for a bit takes off too. Inspiration for me is so spontaneous and comes from the silliest and most mundane stuff. I once had an “ah-ha” moment from a stick of butter. Don’t ask. I have a hard time segmenting my life, so I tend to be designing in the back of my head while I’m doing other things, but I think that’s the best part: you never know what’s going to create the spark.

What does the rest of 2009 hold for you?
This year is design development: the possibilities are endless. At Roundhouse we’re ramping up, developing more Oh Plah! and other new and exciting products. At home I’m getting my 5 year old ready to start Kindergarten and my 6 month old is getting ready to crawl. We also have this 100 year old house that we’re renovating ourselves (helps to have a carpenter-turned-architect husband!) so I’d love to have a closet this year.

Rachel Weber of Fog Rachel Weber of Fog and Thistle is a fantastic example of craft with function. Rachel makes the most beautiful, intricate papercut nightlights. If you have children, you know how crucial these little nighttime buggers are. Who ever thought they could be a work of art? Thanks Rachel!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
If memory serves, I wanted to be an artist, an acrobat (I used to practice stunts on a rope swing), a veterinarian, and a fashion designer (I frequently submitted fashion designs to Katy Keene comic and they'd occasionally use my designs.) I guess one for four is pretty good!

I can see the influence of nature, paper and children in your work. What inspires you the most?
It all meshes together, but I think nature holds the biggest influence. It is all around us and it translates well for children.

What does 2009 hold for you?
I'm very excited about working on full sized lamp shades. I have a few prototypes under way and I'm raring to go!

Apr 16 recipe | pumpkin pockets by jennifer carden
Email Post Print Post

Fresh for spring, a simple recipe to make with the kids from Jennifer Carden (author of The Toddler Cafe). Thanks Jen!

Have a leftover can of pumpkin lurking in your pantry from Thanksgiving?? "What do I do with it you ask?" Get the kids and make Pumpkin Pockets!

The sun is getting warmer and the days are getting longer and that means the kids will be playing outside more. They will want to play until the mosquitoes are buzzing and the sun is going down. I say keep them in as long as you can, cooking at your side, not because I don't like playing outside but because cooking with them is so fun! I love having my daughter in the kitchen, sometimes it can slow me down but mostly it is wonderful. Here is a very easy recipe, if they like ravioli they will love making these. Make sure to let them fill and seal the pasta, they will be more likely to eat it in the end.

Pumpkin Pockets

Here is a very easy way to make homemade ravioli. Gyoza wrappers can be baked, fried, or boiled like pasta. In this case the wrappers cook up just like pasta, with a creamy inside. Serve with browned cinnamon butter, or just plain as a great finger food. Freeze extra Pockets for those nights when the kids are hungry and you’re too tired to cook. Just boil, drain, and serve.

Makes 60 ravioli

8 ounces cream cheese
One 15-ounce can pumpkin puree
1 teaspoon kosher salt plus 1 tablespoon for pasta water
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 package (60) round gyoza wrappers (see Note)
2 tablespoons butter, for garnish
Grated Parmesan cheese, for garnish

Place the cream cheese in a microwave-safe bowl, and heat on high for 30 seconds to soften. Add the pumpkin and stir to combine. Add 1 teaspoon of the salt, the nutmeg, and cinnamon, and mix with a stick blender or by hand until the filling is smooth.

Place a 1/2 teaspoon-sized ball of filling in the center of each wrapper. Wet the edges with water and fold the ravioli over to form half moons. Pinch to close, pressing down lightly around the mounds of filling to prevent air bubbles.

Bring a large pot of water to a boil add 1 tablespoon of the salt. Gently add the ravioli, and cook for about 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they float. (Depending on the size of the pot, you may have to cook them in batches.) Drain the pasta and toss them with butter and Parmesan.

Recipe Notes:
- If you are cooking frozen Pumpkin Pockets, extend the cooking time to 6 minutes.
- If you have whole nutmeg, use your micro grater or box grater to grate it into the filling.
- Wonton wrappers are square and gyoza are round and slightly thicker, but they are essentially made of the same ingredients. You can use either for this recipe; the flavor and cooking time will be longer for gyoza.

You can also view the recipe on Jen's blog, The Toddler Cafe

Mango is one of those foods that does not need to be steamed/cooked for baby. They can certianly eat it fresh. So you can puree fresh:

2. Skip the steam function of the Beaba Babycook and place the chopped mango in the beaba bowl + puree smooth or chunky.
3. Feed fresh mango puree to baby or freeze in Fresh Baby Food Trays.

Or you can steam:

2. Lightly steam the chopped mango by following these directions. I steamed for 4 minutes. Then puree.... smooth or chunky.
3. Feed fresh mango puree to baby or freeze in Fresh Baby Food Trays.

Mar 24 recipe | banana oat cookies
Email Post Print Post

You can only make + eat so much banana bread with all those over-ripe bananas sitting on the counter. When I found this recipe on 101cookbooks.com (called Nikki's Healthy Cookies) i was thrilled. Finally another use for all those bananas.  Eliot + I made them, which was fun and they're quite tasty.....and healthy. Bonus!

Here's the recipe:

3 large, ripe bananas, well mashed (about 1 1/2 cups)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup coconut oil, barely warm - so it isn't solid (or alternately, olive oil)
2 cups rolled oats
2/3 cup almond meal
1/3 cup coconut, finely shredded & unsweetened
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon fine grain sea salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
6 - 7 ounces chocolate chips or dark chocolate bar chopped

Preheat oven to 350 degrees, racks in the top third.

In a large bowl combine the bananas, vanilla extract, and coconut oil. Set aside. In another bowl whisk together the oats, almond meal, shredded coconut, cinnamon, salt, and baking powder. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir until combined. Fold in the chocolate chunks/chips.The dough is a bit looser than a standard cookie dough, don't worry about it. Drop dollops of the dough, each about 2 teaspoons in size, an inch apart, onto a parchment (or Silpat) lined baking sheet. Bake for 12 - 14 minutes. I baked these as long as possible without burning the bottoms and they were perfect - just shy of 15 minutes seems to be about right in my oven.

Makes about 3 dozen bite-sized cookies.

New from Adrift Mobiles is the most beautiful Mora. Mora is 3 abstract leaves made of wood veneer, delicately balanced and suspended. The veneer is cut so that the grain mimics the veins of a leaf.

I imagine the open spaces in the falling, drifting leaves of Mora would make the most beautiful shapes and shadows on the ceiling.

Mar 22 q+a | kelly smith + traci roloff of filzfelt
Email Post Print Post

I've been a big fan of Filzfelt, so I was crazy excited when Chris picked it as a February Forest Finds. Wool felt is simply, fantastic. Equally fantastic? Kelly + Traci of Filzfelt. Thank you ladies!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Traci:  I honestly don’t know, it was so long ago!
Kelly:  It was constantly changing. At one point a lawyer, later an art teacher, professional gymnast/soccer player, traveler...I did go through a bout of making clothing for my cabbage patch kids in elementary school and then later in high school making dresses and bags for myself out of old clothing, so that designer/maker part of me has always been there.

You ladies are the felt queens! Why felt? How does this 1 material inspire you?
Kelly:
I've been working with since 2005 with my other company (Etcetera Media) and can't get enough of it! It's a monolithic material that is quite structural on it's own, it's edges can be left raw without finishing, it's 100% wool (recycled from sheep!) which means its eco-friendly, recyclable and renewable. It's also conveniently water resistant, and just gorgeous on it's own.
Traci: For me, the inherent beauty of materials has always been appealing. Too much embellishment or froofrooness (is that a word?!) is not for me. And wool felt is beautiful and surprisingly textural and saturated in color. Its also a material that's been around forever and there’s something wonderful about taking an ancient art and putting a modern spin on it.

What does 2009 hold for you?
Hopefully profit and fame. No really, besides just selling felt on a regular basis, we hope to spread the love of felt in this country. We are currently working on a permanent felt installation in a retail space in Boston and collaborating with other designers and architects on their own products and projects. We’re also totally excited to be an exhibitor at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in NYC this spring.

Mar 6 q+a | matthew carden

I am absolutely fascinated by they way I am transported into the art of Matthew Carden. I love when art is not only interesting to look at, but draws you in.... to marshmallows, peas, chocolate and cheese. Amazing.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
As a kid I did not think much about the long term. No "I wanna be a fireman or an astronaut" memories that I can recall. The family business was there, but not an option, and my folks pretty much left it up to me to decide what to do. Art, creativity, and play have always been a part of my life. So, it seems natural that being a creative professional/artist as a Photographer would be the result. I really love what I do, and can't imagine doing anything else.

You have an amazing talent of bringing food to life and life to food. What's your secret? What inspires you?
I try to work with subjects and clients that are about things I enjoy. Married to a Chef and cookbook Author and living in Northern California the food and wine scene is big for me. I also collect old and odd toys (and small figures), so the "play" things come into my work a lot. Affecting people and getting their minds moving creatively is the most inspiring of all. Oh, and my wife and daughter of course....:)

What does 2009 hold for you?
I am excited to be expanding my website and the collections of different work that will be available for purchase and exhibition starting in April 09. I will also be adding to the "Small World" series, and that series is currently being considered for use in a calendar and a book. Just keeping our heads above water these days is the main goal, but we will still try and fun while doing it...

Thank you Matthew!!

Mar 1 q+a | chris + luis of cardboard safari
Email Post Print Post

The deer + moose cardboard trophy heads are one of those products that make you say, Whoah, that is really cool. Because they are. Cardboard Safari is the brainchild of 2 guys, Chris and Luis who are inspired by nature and enjoy making products out of sustainable materials. Not only do the trophies make a great conversation piece, but are a lot of fun to assemble too.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Chris: I wanted to make neat stuff.
Luis: A rocket pilot like Han Solo.  As a teenager, a rock star and now I am still thinking about what to be when I grow up.

What was the inspiration behind Cardboard Safari?
We cut a topographic model of cardboard for a local architect and fell in love with the material.  I contacted my cousin (who works in the cardboard industry) to find a supplier and he regaled us with stories of his recent deer hunting adventures.  We just put 2 and 2 together.

What does 2009 hold for you?

Fun new product ideas and some surprising tangents.

Thank you Chris + Luis!

ABC’s by Amy of Little Alouette

A is for Autobio:
I grew up an only child in Southeastern Ohio’s woods. I believe the freedom and encouragement of my parents to explore and create daily gave me a highly creative mind. My journals from my childhood are awesome relics of a girl unafraid to dream. My favorite spot was the creek bed and I did have a motorbike. Like clockwork I rebelled against the country life and lived all over the world before settling in a city. I still miss the stillness and quiet of the country. I still long for my creek bed.

B is for Balance:
I am daily seeking balance of work and family. It is really hard to find all the time in the day for it all. I have come to realize that one must be able to live with a messy house sometimes. There must be time when you put everything away and focus on the family. It is getting harder to do this as technology captures us more and more- but one must disconnect from everything each day to connect and find that peace. Artists must also be willing to not be selfish. I want to lock myself up and write and create for hours on end, but it really cannot be that was anymore with a two boys aged 4 & 2. I must find balance. I must carve out time to make out with my husband and laugh until I cry.

C is for Creative Places:
I seek inspiration. I think most people do. I find that going outside and touching the world as I call it makes me a better person. Touch a tree, hug a friend, scrape yr feet against the sidewalk, kick a rock, breathe the sun, arch yr back to the wind. All of the outside can bring us so much happiness. I also love libraries. And pubs. And parks.

But I will not lie. I love the world that lives inside my computer. I find amazing inspiring things each and every day!

Danridge Geiger of the Make Believe Company is the imaginative type, a multi-media artist + woodworker. The mission of the Make Believe Company is to create beautiful handcrafted objects made from sustainable woods that last and inspire the imagination. The voice-powered guitar (above left) is amazing. My son Eliot loves his.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I didn't know the word designer, so I wanted to be an architect. I liked to draw and make things up.

What's the most inspiring aspect of working with wood?
It can be anything. From a toy to a chair. The only limit to the material is your imagination.

What does 2009 hold for you?
To get a Make Believe Guitar into the hands of every kid on the planet.

Thank you Danridge! Be sure to check out his blog.

Feb 19 my life with the beaba babycook .02
Email Post Print Post

My life with the Beaba Babycook continues. This little appliance really rocks it. I am loving it. My 3 year old calls it the "baby baby cooker" which makes me laugh.

Part .02 Organic Apples

1. Wash + chop 3 small or 2 large organic apples (above, left). Because organic apples have never been sprayed with nasty pesticides + chemicals, the peels are ok to eat. I left the peels on which gave the puree a nice rosy color. Side thought: non-organic fruit is a really bad idea.
2. Follow the directions on how to use the Beaba, here. Super simple.
3. Feed fresh apple puree to baby or freeze in Fresh Baby Food Trays (shown above, right).

I was always a bit nervous when making my 1st son baby food. Back then, these were some of my questions + concerns:

How much baby food do I make at one time?
Not much. To start, babies do not necessarily eat much - a tablespoon (about 1 "cube") or so at a time. Making your own babyfood in small batches  not only makes it easy on you (you can literally do it while you make your morning coffee) but also allows you to try foods out on your baby to see what he likes. No big commitment to a 5 lb. bag of sweet potatoes!

Thick or thin?
Big decisions, which depends on what stage your baby is in. Once you have reach the pureeing step you can decide how thin (super smooth) or thick (chunky) you want to make the baby food. You can control the texture by using the steaming liquid (water!) in the pureeing process. Which is helpful.

Added bonus: Instant healthy pasta sauce.

Baby food puree marketed as "sauce" for pasta is a perfect toddler lunch. This is perhaps the best idea i've had in a long time. Here is my brilliance:

1. Toss a handful of fresh (or from the freezer) mini-pasta (like ravioli) into a pan of salted boiling water + cook to the instructions on the package.
2. Defrost a couple cubes (if you use Fresh Baby Food Trays) of sweet potato, butternut squash etc.
3. Once the pasta is cooked, mix the defrosted puree with the pasta and a bit of butter or olive oil.
4. Slice up a crispy apple or grapes and you have a healthy, quick lunch for the kiddo.

I am now seeing the long term potential of the Beaba! Next week my series "My life with the Beaba Babycook" will continue as I bring to you butternut squash. Total excitement.

Feb 19 q+a | lisa price of artgoodies
Email Post Print Post

Have you ever held a linocut? Lisa Price's linocut prints are absolutely amazing. The prints have an wonderful depth, each print is slightly different. The colors, so thoughtful. Thank you Lisa for kicking off this month's Forest Finds Q+A!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wasn't one of those kids who had a particular career in mind. My parents encouraged us to keep our options open instead of guiding us directly into one career path. Naturally I have created things all my life. Drawing has been a huge part of my life ever since I could pick up a crayon. I also spent a lot of time playing with fabric and hand sewing doll clothes which led my grandmother to believe that I would become a fashion designer. My interest in nature and animals led me to write a paper on becoming a veterinarian in eighth grade. That was a momentary lapse created by force and was quickly trumped by more art classes. I believe the creation of artgoodies has been building my whole life. It's wonderful to be doing something for a living that makes total sense and seems to have had such a natural progression.

You are a very talented printmaker. What is your favorite part of the process? What inspires your imagery?
Thank you so much. It's hard to nail down one particular aspect of printmaking as it really is an amazing process as a whole. Carving the block and making intuitive decisions that can't be taken back is pretty exciting. Once you cut the block there is no going back, and I like the permanence and boldness of making those marks. Pulling the very first print is a really great point too. It's really exciting to see your print come alive. Mixing color ranks near the top for me. I mix all my own colors from scratch using only the primaries and white. I usually have an idea of the color direction but never hold up fabrics or color swatches to match. It fascinates me because later on when I am making aprons or stuffies the vintage fabrics have a way of matching almost perfectly. I tend to use fabrics almost exclusively from the 40's-60's and I guess I just have some kind of inner color retrometer.  The process as a whole is very intuitive and therapeutic to me.

As stated in my bio, I am heavily influenced by nature and vintage items. I have spent a lot of time studying both. I find them both to hold elements of wonder and whimsy. Sometimes the simplest things can make us the happiest and be the most beautiful.

What does 2009 hold for you?
2009 holds more travel for artgoodies. I hope to venture into new territory as far as indie craft shows go. I love to be out with my work meeting new and existing customers face to face. There's a great sense of community at these shows and so many awesome vendors. There's a major account in the works, and also some of my pieces are supposed to make their big screen debut. I am particularly excited about both of these but have to keep them under raps until they are officially out. I am researching some new product options and hope to see some other exciting opportunities come to fruition this year. There will be some new designs of course, and I am hopeful for more exciting press, new accounts, and unexpected surprises!

Feb 12 recipe | chocolate valentines cookies
Email Post Print Post

Valentines Day + chocolate = chocolate cookies.. a fun project to do with the kids! These  Milk Chocolate Cookies are from the February '09 issue of Food&Wine (and it's also on their website). While the recipe is for frosting filled cookies, we skipped frosting because they are so amazing on their own. Besides being chocolate-y, these cookies are also crispy and a bit carmel-ish. We have made them 3 times in the past week or so!

1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
6 ounces milk chocolate, melted and cooled slightly
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

  2. Make the cookies: In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the butter with the brown sugar and granulated sugar until smooth. Add the melted chocolate and vanilla and beat until smooth. In a small bowl, whisk the flour with the cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the bowl and beat at low speed just until incorporated. Roll the dough between 2 sheets of parchment paper to a scant 1/4-inch thickness and refrigerate until firm, about 15 minutes.

  3. Using a 2-inch round cookie cutter (or heart shape!), stamp out as many rounds as possible and transfer to the baking sheets, 1 inch apart. Gather the scraps and chill, with the cut-out rounds, for 10 minutes. Reroll the scraps and stamp out more rounds.

  4. Bake the cookies in the lower and middle thirds of the oven for about 10 minutes, until dry and set; shift the pans halfway through baking. Transfer the cookies to a rack and let cool completely.

Feb 11 my life with the beaba babycook .01
Email Post Print Post

The Beaba Babycook is one of those baby gadgets that I thought was slightly ridiculous because why should making baby food require a separate appliance? Some things seem so ridiculous that I have to try them out for myself. Perfect timing: our baby son Owen is starting solids.

This is what i found upon making sweet potatoes for the baby: i absolutely love the Beaba Babycook! It's amazing, right? Even though I am not a first time mom + have made baby food before I found it incredibly.... effortless.

Day 01: Organic Sweet Potatoes
1. Wash + peel 1 large organic sweet potato. Roughly cut into chunks (pictured above right).
2. Place the sweet potato chunks in the basket + follow the simple instructions concerning how much water to add.
3. Put the lids in place + turn the dial so the Beaba can do it's thing.
4. About 20 minutes later, the sweet potatoes are mushy-tender when I poke them with a fork. Good!
5. Carefully remove the "basket" that sits inside the steamer bowl. Hot!
6. Some water remains in the steamer bowl (above, left) so i poured about 1/2 of it out. I knew I will need some of it when pureeing the sweet potatoes.
7. Click the steamer bowl back in place and dump the sweet potatoes back into it, putting the lids in place, etc.
8. Now the fun part: puree! Turn the dial to the right + blitz away.
9. When you reach the desired consistency (slightly chunky to super smooth).... you're done! I blitz the sweet potatoes to super smooth....
10. At this point, the baby food is still warm... feed to your baby on the spot or freeze in cubes in Fresh Baby food trays (above, left)

I was always a bit nervous when making my 1st son baby food. Back then, these were some of my questions + concerns:

What about keeping things sterile?
I was using a pan on the stove to steam + a mini food processor. The Beaba, however, is self-contained. You steam + chop in the same container, and it's only used for baby which seems more sterile to me. Also, clean-up was shockingly simple.

How long does making baby food take, anyways? Ah!
I will admit that people may think you are a super mom if you make your own baby food. It seems time consuming. And, back then, sorta was for me. Not so much the cooking.... but the mess I seemed to make. I have been converted! The Beaba is self-contained and literally took 30 minutes start to finish, including clean-up, even with the "help" of my 3 year old. Most of that 30 minutes was waiting for the food to steam.

I am now a fan of the Beaba Babycook + will continue to bring you my new series "My life with the Beaba Babycook"...!

Perhaps one of the best parts of Lisa Price's collection of Art Goodies is that they are printed with a linocut. This adds a lovely depth to the prints on the stuffies and tea towels. The sailboat will make you say "Wow! I love handmade!".

The sailboat stuffie is my favorite but i can't get over how amazing the whale tea towel is too!

Feb 10 new! | boon splat + water bugs
Email Post Print Post

Boon really knows how to make bathtime more fun: Splat and Water Bugs.

Splat is the bathtime take on horseshoes or ring-toss. Water Bugs reminds me of water-skippers on a lake. Except Boon equips the kids with a cool net to catch the little buggers.

Also: Boon's plastic is happy. It's BPA, Phthalate + PVC free. And the pricepoint won't break your piggy bank at $7.99 each.

Feb 9 forest finds | corkels
Email Post Print Post

Anything on wheels is a hit with the kids. You know it. The Corkels by Ben Blanc blend wheels with eco chic.  A lion on wheels? Sure!

Ben Blanc is a talented and witty American designer. The Corkels are a fun toy at a great pricepoint ($10) but also are really witty and I think I will snag a boat... for my own desk.

Feb 9 new! | 09 bumbleride flyer
Email Post Print Post

I recently gifted myself with a Bumbleride Flyer. In the name of research, of course. I have a handful of different strollers and so I am not easily impressed. But I have to tell you, the Bumbleride Flyer really blew me away.

It has an amazing amount of features for a very reasonable pricepoint ($329). My top 3 favorite things about the Flyer: 1. The handle reverses so you can face your baby or have the baby face outwards. 2. It comes with a lot of cool standard accessories including a raincover and infant carseat adapter. 3. Super easy fold! Fits in the trunk!

Also, new for 2009: New Colors: Lava (black) and Vita (pink). Redesigned canopy, wheels and footprint of the Bumbleride Flyer. New 1 touch harness system. The raincover is also now a standard accessory. Cool!

The proof is in the pudding: my 7 month old sat in the Flyer for 1.5 hours during a recent Ikea outing. Amazing! No tears. Total happiness for all involved.

Jan 30 q+a | jacquie van keuren of notion farm
Email Post Print Post

Thanks to Jacquie Van Keuren, I can't wait for my son to be of age + loose his baby teeth. This Tooth Fairy Kit totally rocks + is perfect for the obsessive record keeping mother that I have turned out to be. Genius. And the design? Fantastic + beautiful!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I literally wanted to be my big sister.

What's the story behind the tooth fairy kit?! What inspired you you create a very simple, useful yet artful product?
Well, the funny story is that I remember when I was a kid, being creeped out opening a drawer in my mother's very 70's stereo hope chest and finding a pile of teeth and hair. Tiny little teeth and locks of baby hair. I thought of that moment when I started seeing more of my mom friends show up with gap toothed kids and knew there had to be a fun way to commemorate (and more appropriately stow away) the lost teeth.

What does 2009 hold for you?
We plan to introduce a couple more products this fall. And will be adding extra certificate packs for the Tooth Fairy Kits shortly -- for multi-kid households and those connoisseurs of collecting.

Thanks Jacquie!

Jan 29 new | skip hop tubby
Email Post Print Post

So, the battle is officially on: who is better? The longstanding favorite, the Boon Frog Pod or the sleek newcomer, Skip Hop's Tubby? Ohh, it's like Bobby Flay's show, Throwdown! Well, almost.

The Skip Hop Tubby does have a couple exciting selling points:
1. Low pricepoint ($20).
2. Made of neo-prene, so it's machine washable.
3. BPA Free, Phthalate-Free so the kids won't get poisoned.

I just hung up the Tubby (in orange) in our bathroom tonight. So far? Eliot thought it was a great new toy. Hmmm.

Jan 22 q+a | psalms heiple of psalms
Email Post Print Post

Psalms Heiple is one of those people that keeps a sketch book that you'd secretly want to steal. The kind of person that does not talk to talk but, in the right time, reveals her ideas + projects she has been working on. I have been to her quaint studio + next time I will be sure to take a picture when she leaves the room so I can show you what I mean. Amazing.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted very badly to be two things, an antarctic explorer and a float plane pilot. Which brings me to confess that i also had a thing for Jacques Cousteau.

Tell me about your inventive childhood in the remote woods of Alaska! What about it inspires you today?
I remember my mom having these two angora rabbits that she kept. She would brush them with a sort of paddle brush, collect the fur, spin it into yarn on a spindle and knit us mittens, hats, sweaters, all kinds of things. I did not think much of it when I was a kid, but now when I look back I think "wow!". My mom did a lot of things like this that I took for granted when I was younger, but the older i get the more I am inspired by her and the coziness of the homemade.

What does 2009 hold for you?

Let's see... 2009. Let's just say that this will be a year of new projects. I love doing things that I have never done before.

Thank you Psalms!

Jan 22 new! | oeuf classic toy store
Email Post Print Post

I would have gone crazy for this Oeuf Classic Toy Store when I was a kid. Three levels of compartmental goodness! The Toy Store would be perfect fun for a game of grocery store or a sleeping spot for a bunch of baby dolls.

And check this out: The bins lay flat or swivel at an angle and have removable dividers so you can store a multitude of items of varying sizes. And, as with all well designed pieces, the Ouef Classic Toy Store is versatile: it can be used in any room of the house. As in it would make an amazing snack-shack in the kitchen!

Available in 2 woods colors, walnut stain and birch.

I am happy to be friends with Tressa of Dress Me Up. I recently placed an order for her new Organic Soft Blocks. A few days later she sent me this picture of her husband and daughter pulling my order on a sled in the snow! How fun is that?

Santa gave baby Owen the Organic Soft Blocks for Christmas. They are a hit with the baby. And fun for a 3 year old to throw, evidently.

You can find the Organic Soft Blocks here.

Thanks Tressa!

Email Post Print Post

Amy + Joe Sharp of Little Alouette are the go-get 'em type.Confident, positive +imaginative.  A hoot to work with and their wood toys are a treasure and a delight (and incredibly popular). Thank you Amy + Joe!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When Joe was a little boy he wanted glam rocker and Amy wanted to be a professional roller skater.
Joe was also interested in woodworking as Joe's dad built model airplanes from scratch in the North of England and was an inventor. Amy was an artistic wee one and always wanted to create. Her favorite place was the library and it still is today.

What inspires you the most? Your kids, your life, trees... do tell!
Our children are our main inspiration forest. We are so blessed to have kiddos that have great imaginations and massive amounts of love. It is creative city here everyday. We like modern design and find a lot of inspiration walking in the country of Southeastern Ohio where Amy is from. We own land in Athens, Ohio and like to escape the city as much as we can. Being in the country is like the best therapy for stress. It helps open yr mind.

What does 2009 hold for you?
2009 - We hope to be making gorgeous toys and art for you!
We have some groovy things in the workshop a brewing!
We are planning some travel and some fun. It's gonna be a fabulous year!

Be sure to visit Amy's blog.  Yes!

bumbleride flite

Sneak Peek: the Bumbleride Flite!

"In Spring 2009 Bumbleride will welcome this new addition to the family. [The Bumbleride Flite] 12 pounds of pure function and design, this little tyke is Bumbleride's take on a traditional lightweight stroller. Smaller, faster and full of energy, Flite is perfect for that urban family on the go." -- Bumbleride HQ

Also for 2009, Bumbleride shows a fresh new side. Debuting 2 new colors (Vita, vibrant pink and Lava, sleek black) as well as a new wheel design for the Indie (pictured above, left). 2009 is all about function, color and style for Bumbleride.

And I am personally looking forward to meeting the Bumbleride Flite (pictured above, right)!

Jan 15 new! | avalisa for 2009

Best word to describe Avalisa wall art? Options. Avalisa has about a million options. Designs. Colorways. Patterns. Sizes. Series. Ideas.

New for 2009, Avalisa has just released 15 new designs -- from autos to apples to airplanes. Amazing new colors as well, including grey which is my favorite color right now.

Jan 14 fresh! | boodalee wall graphics
Email Post Print Post

Boodalee! This is why I like wall graphics + think they are a great solution for a kid's room: wall graphics won't fall on your kid's head.

Until recent application of wall graphics, the walls around Eliot's bed have been blank as I:
1. Did not want anything heavy hanging on the wall above his bed.
2. Did not want him to be tempted to pull/kick/swing artwork hanging on the wall. He's 3, after all. And that would be fun?
3. There is a lot of wall space to consider and I can be indecisive.

Wall Graphics by Boodalee solves the issues. Nothing to fall, swing or otherwise hurt your kidlet. They cover a large area of wall and all considering, are really quite economical, ranging in price - $45 to $55.

My favorite? The Trees, available in 3 colorways.

Jan 11 q+a | jantien baas + hester worst of tas-ka
Email Post Print Post

Yes! I really am tying up loose ends from '08! And look what I found? An interview with Hester and Jantien of the amazing Dutch company, Tas-kaTas-ka was an October Forest Find. Delightful. Don't you want to jump right into their amazing studio + get working? I do! Thank you Hester and Janitien!

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
J: I wanted to be a veterinary surgeon.
H: When I was little always wanted to be a pilot, why?? I don't know but I was always making stuff on my sewing machine, little doll clothes and skirts for my self. I come from a very creative family so I think I grew up with the idea that you could make everthing. I still believe that that is the best thing my parents taught me because your opportunities are unlimited. (I hope you understand what I mean...)

How does working together inspire your creativity and the products that you make?
H: Working with somebody gives you another prospective on things. I also think we make each other better. And it is nice to be able to share all your work related things with somebody that totally understands you. I really can recommend it to everybody!
J: It's inspiring you creativity a lot. Because if I don't have ideas, Hester does and automatically I'm enthusiastic. My creativity begins to work and fill up her ideas. Or I have another idea because of her idea. Most of the time we design our products and fabrics together.

What does 2009 hold for you?
H: We would like to expand our collection with new products and make more fabric designs.
J: That's a good question .... We want to build out our collection with new products and want to sell our collection more abroad. And I think we want to do some nice projects, maybe with other designers but that isn't all familiar yet. We want to be refreshing for ourselves and others!

Jan 8 q+a | anna joyce of anna joyce design
Email Post Print Post

As I finish up odds + ends for 2008, I have a handful of goodies for you all, including a bunch of Q+A's from Nov-Dec Forest Finds! To kick the goodness off, today's Q+A is with Anna Joyce, the talented artist who creates hand cut and sewn canvases using new and vintage fabrics. Thank you Anna!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a zoo keeper, the owner of a cinnamon roll cart, an actress and an Air Force flight school instructor ( I watched Top Gun a few too many times...)

What inspires or influences you more: your art education or your daily life/environment ?
I was very inspired by art school- I loved it! But I am mostly inspired by my daily life and environment. A shirt cuff, an old pillow, or a book at a thrift store can inspire a whole new line. But mostly I am inspired by my baby girls.

What does 2009 hold for you?
Parenting! And art, and health...I hope to continue and grow my studio practice more and more in 2009. More products are around the corner. I would like to expand my line to include table linens, and possibly bed linens as well!

Jan 6 new! | oeuf 4 drawer + hutch
Email Post Print Post

For 2009, a couple new players in the Oeuf Classic collection: the Oeuf classic 4 drawer dresser (with optional hutch attachment, converting the dresser, well, into a hutch.) The Oeuf Classic 3 drawer is fantastic (I know, I have one in my son's room) but I am so intrigued by the additional storage of drawer #4 as well as the increased organization bits of the hutch! We all seem to be up for more organization + space, right?

The Oeuf four drawer dresser fits a standard size changing pad to convert the dresser to a changing station (yep, Oeuf is smart!) though the hutch ony fits the new 4 drawer dressers, so no retro-fitting your classic 3 drawer.
