Naturepedic: What is an organic mattress and why do I want one?
You’ve heard of organic vegetables and organic milk, but what on earth is an organic mattress? Is it really healthier?
Well, quite simply, yes. Organic vegetables are healthier because they do not have chemical pesticide residues. Organic milk is healthier because it comes from cows that are not given artificial chemical hormones. Likewise, organic crib mattresses do not have all the chemicals that regular crib mattresses have.
But that’s just the beginning. Organic mattresses are made with organic and non-toxic materials instead of conventional and chemically questionable materials. Parents and physicians recommend organic crib mattresses as a way to avoid unnecessary exposure to these chemicals.
What are the certification standards for an organic mattress?
Organic mattresses, like all other certified products made with organic fiber and textiles, are certified under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The largest U.S. GOTS approved certifier is Oregon Tilth Certified Organic (OTCO).
In particular, the GOTS standard requires that all fiber and fabrics, with limited exceptions, must be made from certified materials that meet the USDA's National Organic Program (NOP) standard and are processed in accordance with the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). All other components (such as innersprings, fire protection, etc.) must meet stringent non-toxic standards. Naturepedic is an OTCO certified organic processor of fiber and textiles and is certified to manufacture organic mattresses and bedding.
Are mattresses labeled "eco" or "green" just as good?
No. "Eco" and "green" are not regulated terms and can be misleading. For example, "plant derived" or "soybean" foam used in many "eco" mattress models are at least 80% petroleum/chemical based and are not really "made of soybeans." "Bamboo" fabric, also common in "eco" models, is typically made using environmentally toxic chemicals with no trace of the bamboo plant in the finished product. Many of these "eco" materials may sound good, but they are not really "natural" and are certainly not focused on eliminating harmful chemicals.

Happy with our choice Review by SeattleK

Expecting our first little one in March and have been feeling pretty lost on what baby items and brands to purchase. When it comes to crib mattresses the spread of quality and price is amazing. With crib mattresses anywhere from $50 up to $500+ it's hard to believe that they all serve the same purpose - so where safe for your baby to sleep. Reasons we like Naturepedic Organic Cotton Lightweight Ultra 2-stage Crib Mattress our as follows:
* Organic
* Lightweight - I didn't think this would be that big of an issue until I put sheets on it for the first time last night. It is so convenient to be able to lift the corners easily. Especially when you consider how many times you end of changing sheets on a babies mattress.
* 2-stage - I liked this idea a lot. One side is firm, which is safe for and infant. The other toddler side is a bit softer. It's not soft like pillow top, but just has a bit more give to it.
* Color - I know that you just cover the mattress up with sheets anyways, but I do really like the color. It's not as brownish as it appears on the website. More of a ivory color. It looks really good with our oyster-shell crib.
* Fit - The mattress fits perfectly in our standard sized crib.
* Waterproof - No need for an extra cover. Surface wipes clean.
Overall, I know that there are cheaper options out there for crib mattresses, however we wanted to start our daughter's sleeping practices out right. This will be the mattress that she will have for the first few years of life when she is learning how to fall asleep and stay asleep through the night. This item is well worth the price for our family. (Posted on 1/11/13)
